Frequently
Asked Questions
What travel
documents do I need to get into Mexico?
The best place to go for this information is the United
States State Dept. web page: http://travel.state.gov/mexico.html.
For citizens of the United States the best document
is a passport. However a certified copy of a U.S.
Birth certificate, a naturalization certificate, a
Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certification
of Citizenship accompanied by a picture ID such as
a driver's license will should also suffice. More
stringent requirements may apply if you are traveling
with minors. It's best to go to the web page above
to get all the details. Remember these requirement
apply to US citizens. Different rules may be in effect
for citizens of other nations.
Does Akumal
have an airport?
No.. The Cancun airport is the best international
airport to use to get to Akumal. You could also use
the Cozumel international airport but then you would
have to take the ferry over to Playa del Carmen and
make your way from Playa del Carmen to Akumal. Using
the Cancun airport is a lot simpler.
How do I
get from Cancun airport to Akumal?
There are 3 ways of doing this:
Cab - Cabs are waiting
at the airport terminal and you can take one to Playa
del Carmen.
Shuttle - This we have
to arrange in advance. A vehicle of the size appropriate
for you group will pick you up at the airport and
on the day you leave your home, will return you to
the airport.
Rental Car - You can
pick up a vehicle at the airport and drive it to Playa
del Carmen. Getting to Akumal is easy. We'll give
you detailed instructions on how to gain entrance
into your home or condo
What are
the costs of these transportation options?
The rates vary. It's best to call the office to get
the latest update.
How easy
is it to get from Akumal to other destinations?
Akumal is about 30 miles south of Playa del Carmen
and about 10 miles north of Tulum. Because it's right
off the highway it's easy to get anywhere on the mainland.
Cancun is about 1 1/2 hours away now that the highway
has been enlarged. Lots of buses go up and down the
corridor so even if you don't have a car it's easy
to flag down a bus
How far
are the residences from the beach?
All of the homes and condos (with the exception of
Villas Maya) are right on the water. In North Akumal
the shore is mostly rocky and all of the private homes
there are on rocky shoreline. The condominiums we
offer there are on sandy beaches. In the rest of the
Akumals, all the homes and condos are on sandy beaches.
Where are
the supermarkets?
Currently in the Akumals, there aren't any supermarkets.
Just 2 grocery stores located right before you get
to the archway in North Akumal. The store on the right
(as you face the sea) offers a wider selection but
higher prices. Usually we get whatever staples we
can find at the grocery store on the left and then
the remainder at the other. There is also a market
held several days a week where fresh produce is offered.
It's located just before the archway.
Is baby-sitting
available?
Yes, we can arrange for baby-sitters at most homes.
However, English speaking baby-sitters are hard to
come by.
Where's
the best place to change money?
ATMs. However, currently there are no banks in Akumal
so you have to go to Playa del Carmen to change your
money. Everyone accepts dollars interchangeably with
pesos so as long as you have dollars you'll be able
go get along just fine.
Can I get
Internet connections from the home? Or from anywhere
in town?
Currently, Travel Services of Akumal does offer Internet
service. It is open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It is
located in North Akumal near the archway entrance.
Other Internet access services should be opening soon.
However, none of the homes offer an Internet connection.
Where can
I make long distance calls?
The cheapest way to make a long distance call is by
buying a phone card. It's called a Tarjeta Ladatel.
It works with most public pay phones The cards are
sold at stores in Akumal. . Denominations run from
about $2.00 up to $10.00. It costs about $1.00 per
minute to call the USA There are also storefronts
that offer long distance service and phones that work
with credit cards. But the credit card phones are
very expensive to use.
Can I have
things mailed to me? Can I mail from there?
If you want something sent to you, it's best to do
it by DHL. But even DHL can take 3-4 days. Likewise
you can send mail from Mexico. But if you are sending
anything of value, we suggest you either wait till
you get to the states to send it or use DHL. The Mexican
Postal Service is not very dependable in its delivery
of package.
